About chestnutters.org

Our Story

Chestnutters are people dedicated (some say obsessed) with bringing back the majestic American Chestnut forests. The WV Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation supplied seedlings for a study at Shepherd University in West Virginia. We are determining which mycelium best support these trees' resilience.

This effort grew into an extensive web-based citizen science project, aimed at creating a vast database on American Chestnuts, and sharing blight remedies. Currently, individual trees may receive treatments like soil packs. We also encourage collective efforts

to combat chestnut blight.

Today, we invite hundreds of volunteers to join us in revitalizing the American Chestnut forests to help cool the planet.

Everyone is welcome to participate!

— Susan Thompson, Shepherd University Student in the Appalachian Studies Master's Degree Program, Concentration in Business & the Environment

Let's make the world cooler!

C is for Chestnutters!

Join us and be a proud Chestnutter!  Our work is guided by core values like compassion for all species, tenacity for human survival, integrity in right action, and focus on collaborative input. Shaped by our respect for natural world experiences, these principles drive us to effect sustainable improvements in forests and communities.

Our resolve to restore the American Chestnut was fueled by insights from The Nature Conservancy, revealing the Appalachian corridor as a vital refuge for species migrating due to rising temperatures in the eastern U.S. National Geographic notes that half of the world's species are relocating to cooler areas.

With millions of American Chestnut trees in Appalachia, their survival—aided by our efforts—promises significant ecological benefits like enhanced food security, cooling shade, and substantial carbon sequestration.
